World Leprosy Day – Convey through 9 districts in South Sulawesi

South Sulawesi, 28-30 January 2022. World Leprosy Day is celebrated every last Sunday of January. With financial support from the Sasakawa Health Foundation and NLR Indonesia, YDTI and PerMaTa South Sulawesi organized a convoy of 6 cars and a number of motorcycles through 9 districts of South Sulawesi. 30-50 people joined the journey in the different districts and rode for a while to help spread our message that leprosy can be cured and that stigma and discrimination must end. We were wonderfully received and supported by the local PerMaTa branches and by the health authorities, especially the leprosy control programs. The young people affected by leprosy gave speeches and actively engaged with the people on the streets. A journey full of new experiences, community and fun!

World NTD Day 2022 will be celebrated on January 30th.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of parasitic, viral and bacterial diseases linked to poverty imposing significant health, social and economic consequences. NTDs impose a substantial burden on more than 1 billion people worldwide, predominantly in tropical and subtropical areas and often among the most vulnerable, and marginalized populations.

The pandemic of Covid-19 has disrupted essential health services across the globe, exacerbating inequalities and setting back small scale economies in local communities. The pandemic has disproportionally affected people with NTDs.

DARE-this continues to work with and for people with NTDs aiming to achieve health equity, reducing social stigma and enhancing economic sustainability.
